African-American Research Primer
Summary:
For those with roots in Sub-Saharan Africa genealogy can be a painful process, but a rewarding one. This lecture looks at some of the unique challenges facing those with African roots. This class will look at the records of the reconstruction, emancipation, and enslavement and how those researching people with African ancestors can use these records to establish family relationships and uncover their ancestors.
Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will learn about records of the reconstruction era, particularly those of the Freedman's Bureau
2. Participants will learn about the records of emancipation and the records of enslavement and what repositories to look in to find them.
3. Participants will learn through a case study how the speaker was able to reconstruct three generations of an enslaved family.
